The challenge

Orígenes Seguros is an Argentine life and retirement insurer with over 35 years in the market. Its policies, products and issuance live in Visual Time, its core system.

A landing page that quotes against a spreadsheet and then has someone key the policy in by hand is not a digital channel: it is the same paperwork with a screen in front, and in a regulated environment every manual step is a place where issuance can go wrong.

  • Quote against the core, not a copy: price and conditions had to come from the system that governs the product.
  • Issue for real: the policy had to land correctly in Visual Time, not in a queue to process later.
  • Seven fronts at once: four individual products and three group policy processes, on short timelines.

And none of it could ship in one go: in insurance a bad issuance is not a software error, it is a contract.

The solution

We built the Channels layer product by product, with controlled release to production and client sign off at every milestone.

The project was turnkey and ran between April and August 2020.

Four individual products

  • Quoting and issuance flows for Personal Accident, Long Term Care, Cancer and Female Cancer.
  • Each developed in about two weeks, with its own full cycle.

Three group policy processes

  • Open Group, Endorsements and Policy Front, which is where the corporate business lives.
  • Integrated into the same core, with no parallel circuits.

The same cycle across all seven

  • Requirements and functional analysis, client approved mockups, development, testing and release to the production environment.
  • Milestone delivery, with validation before moving to the next one.
  • Controlled release product by product rather than a single launch.
  • That bounds the risk of each release to one product, which in a regulated setting is the difference between correcting and redoing.

Architecture and technology

  • Channels layer integrated directly with the Visual Time core for quoting and issuance.
  • Seven person team: configuration manager for versioning and deployment, technical lead, architect on architecture and mockups, senior functional analyst, two senior full stack developers and a senior tester.

The result

The insurer went from quoting and issuing with manual steps to doing it against its own core, across seven fronts.

Starting point

  • Landing pages and sales systems with no direct connection to the core system.
  • Health and accident products with no digital channel to launch through.
  • Group policies handled with manual steps.

Results

  • 7 products and processes delivered to production between April and August 2020.
  • 4 individual products developed in about 2 weeks each.
  • 3 group policy processes: Open Group, Endorsements and Policy Front.
  • Quoting and issuance wired directly into the Visual Time core.

Strategic impact

  • A new product no longer needs its own circuit: it enters the layer that already exists.
  • Issuance lands correctly in the core from the first moment, which in insurance is the only way it lands correctly at all.
